Midway — using motion to guide users

PURPOSE

Midway helps users find a spot that lies halfway between them and their friends. After a location for each person is set, the app shows the spot with an equal distance or travel time for everybody – including where to grab a coffee nearby and other recreational activities. Using Midway makes sure everyone involved has an equal journey. Use cases differ from bringing a group of friends together to long-distance relationships, undermining the importance of a simplified universal design approach. The design language of the app keeps things light and fun. Midway celebrates getting together and exploring new places.

PROCESS

This study was designed by me from the original concept to the final animated app design. It’s an exploration of how UI animations can guide through user flows. Motion design keeps interactions cheerful, but more importantly, it helps users navigate by providing visual feedback or gaining focus through attention. Paring the interface itself down to the bone and relying heavily on animation brings its own challenges like accessibility issues and misinterpretations, which always need to be addressed. Even so, I firmly believe that it is always worth considering movement when designing digital assets as another way to provide user guidance.
